The Lagos State Police Command has arrested three suspects after intercepting a truck loaded with dozens of sacks of military camouflage uniforms and cartons of suspected illicit drugs in what security authorities have described as a significant breakthrough against criminal logistics networks.
The operation, carried out by operatives of the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit, led to the seizure of an unregistered MAN diesel truck conveying 47 sacks containing military camouflage apparel and 80 cartons of substances believed to be illegal drugs.
Speaking during a press briefing at the State Command Headquarters in Ikeja on Tuesday, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Fatai Tijani, identified the suspects as Chinedu David, 29; Ezeagwu Chukwuma, 38; and Ifeanyi Ogbeanyi, 45.
According to the police commissioner, the suspects were apprehended on the night of June 20 following actionable intelligence that prompted a targeted operation by security operatives.
Tijani disclosed that preliminary investigations indicate the recovered items were being transported from Lagos to a destination in Nigeria’s South-East region. He noted that detectives are working to unravel the source of the military uniforms, the origin of the suspected narcotics, and the network of individuals behind the shipment.
“The operation resulted in the arrest of three suspects and the recovery of one unregistered MAN diesel truck loaded with 47 sacks of military camouflage uniforms and 80 cartons of substances suspected to be illicit drugs,” the commissioner said.
He added that investigators are focusing on identifying the owners, suppliers, intended recipients, and financiers of the intercepted consignment.
“Investigation is ongoing to determine the source, ownership and intended recipients of the recovered items, as well as establish the extent of the suspects’ involvement in the operation,” he stated.
The seizure comes amid growing concerns over the proliferation of military uniforms in the hands of criminal elements across the country. Security experts have repeatedly warned that terrorists, kidnappers, armed robbers and other violent groups increasingly disguise themselves in military attire to evade detection, gain the confidence of unsuspecting citizens and carry out attacks.
The recovery of such a large quantity of camouflage uniforms has therefore heightened concerns about the possibility of an organised supply chain catering to criminal groups.
However, Tijani reassured residents that the intercepted items posed no immediate threat to Lagos State, explaining that available intelligence suggested the truck was merely transiting through the state en route to another destination.
“It does not pose any form of threat to Lagos State because the items were being moved out of the state. Nevertheless, considering the prevailing security challenges in the country and the fact that criminals have been found wearing military uniforms during operations, we cannot dismiss any possibility,” he said.
The police commissioner reiterated the command’s commitment to disrupting criminal networks and preventing the illegal circulation of military gear and prohibited substances, adding that further arrests may follow as investigations progress.
The latest operation underscores ongoing efforts by security agencies to combat organised crime, drug trafficking and the unlawful possession of military accoutrements, which authorities believe contribute to insecurity in several parts of Nigeria.
