Traders and residents around the bustling Shoe Materials Market in Mushin, Lagos, were thrown into panic on Monday after a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded, injuring one person and triggering an emergency response from security agencies.
The Lagos State Police Command swiftly deployed its Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit and other security personnel to the scene to secure the area and assess the extent of the threat.
Addressing journalists after inspecting the site, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Fatai Tijani, assured residents that the situation had been contained and that there was no ongoing danger to members of the public.
According to the police commissioner, preliminary investigations indicate that the explosion was caused by an Improvised Explosive Device concealed beneath a vehicle.
“The device was planted under the passenger side of the vehicle and detonated when the engine was started,” Tijani said.
One person sustained injuries in the blast and was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment. Police said the victim is in stable condition and receiving medical attention.
Following the incident, EOD specialists conducted a thorough search of the market and surrounding areas to ensure no additional explosive devices were present.
“We carried out a comprehensive sweep of the area and found no other explosive materials. Residents can continue their normal activities without fear,” the commissioner added.
The incident has raised concerns among residents and traders in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, where major bomb-related incidents have become relatively rare in recent years.
The Shoe Materials Market in Mushin is one of the state’s busiest commercial centres, attracting thousands of traders and customers daily. Any security breach within the area is, therefore, likely to generate widespread concern among business owners and residents.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine who planted the suspected explosive device and the motive behind the act. Security agencies have also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious objects or activities to the appropriate authorities.
Police officials reiterated their commitment to maintaining public safety and ensuring that those responsible are identified and brought to justice.
