The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has intensified investigations into the interception of gold valued at more than ₦4.4 billion at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, in what is emerging as one of Nigeria’s most significant recent crackdowns on suspected illegal mineral trafficking.
The anti-graft agency confirmed the arrest of three individuals, following the discovery of approximately 22.2 kilogrammes of undeclared gold allegedly being transported under suspicious circumstances through the airport.
The suspects, identified as Ali Baffa, Aushabu Nasidi, and Mukhtar Muhammad Dan Zaria, include an Aviation Security (AVSEC) officer. They are currently being questioned as investigators seek to unravel the source of the gold, its intended destination, and the network behind the shipment.
The seizure has attracted widespread public attention due to the enormous value of the consignment and lingering questions over its true ownership.
Although the name of a former Zamfara State Governor has surfaced in online discussions surrounding the case, the EFCC has not linked him or any political office holder to the intercepted gold.
The commission has also not issued any official statement, identifying the owner of the consignment.
Nigeria’s solid minerals sector has increasingly come under scrutiny amid growing concerns over illegal mining, smuggling, and the loss of valuable national resources.
Security experts say criminal networks involved in the illicit extraction and movement of gold have become more sophisticated, posing significant economic and security challenges.
The latest interception is being viewed as a major test of the government’s resolve to combat illegal mineral exports and strengthen oversight of the country’s mining industry.
EFCC officials have assured Nigerians that investigations remain ongoing and that anyone found to be connected to the shipment will face appropriate legal action.
As investigators dig deeper into the case, public attention remains fixed on whether the probe will expose the individuals or organisations behind the multi-billion-naira gold consignment.
For now, the identity of the shipment’s owner remains officially undisclosed, leaving a trail of unanswered questions in a case that continues to generate nationwide interest.
