As political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum, the campaign for quality representation in Imo North Senatorial District, also known as Okigwe Zone, received another major boost as hundreds of grassroots stakeholders converged on Ehime Mbano to reaffirm their support for Attorney Charles Onyirimba.
The strategic engagement attracted coordinators, ward executives, polling unit leaders, youth mobilisers, women leaders and committed supporters from the six local government areas that make up Okigwe Zone. The meeting formed part of ongoing consultations aimed at deepening grassroots participation and expanding support for Onyirimba’s senatorial quest.
For many participants, the gathering was more than a political meeting. It was an opportunity to reflect on the developmental challenges confronting Okigwe Zone and the kind of leadership required to reverse years of perceived neglect.
Throughout the engagement, speakers described Onyirimba as a distinguished legal practitioner, accomplished administrator and development-oriented leader with the experience, exposure and competence to provide effective representation at the National Assembly. They maintained that the zone deserves a senator capable of influencing national policy, attracting federal projects, empowering young people and giving the district a stronger voice in Abuja.
The dominant message that emerged from the meeting was that the 2027 election should be determined by competence, character and capacity rather than political party affiliation.
That position was most forcefully articulated by the Women Leader, Mrs. Favour Nwelue, popularly called Ada Okigwe, whose remarks drew resounding applause and unanimous endorsement from participants.
According to her, decades of voting strictly along party lines have failed to deliver the level of development expected by the people of Okigwe Zone.
She argued that poor infrastructure, unemployment, declining economic opportunities and inadequate representation have persisted despite blind loyalty to political platforms, insisting that the time has come for voters to place competence above party labels.
“Our future cannot continue to be determined by party symbols alone,” she declared. “This election must be about who has the vision, credibility and capacity to transform Okigwe Zone.”
Her position resonated strongly across the gathering, with participants agreeing that political parties should no longer overshadow the qualities of individual candidates.
They stressed that effective representation requires integrity, experience, accessibility and a genuine commitment to the welfare of the people.
Youth leaders also pledged to intensify voter enlightenment across communities, encouraging residents to reject politics driven by sentiment, inducement and blind partisanship. Instead, they resolved to promote issue-based campaigns focused on leadership, accountability and sustainable development. They also vowed to vehemently resist any move by whoever to subvert the people’s will.
At the close of the meeting, coordinators, ward executives and polling unit leaders unanimously pledged to strengthen grassroots mobilisation in every community across the six local government areas while awaiting the official commencement of campaigns.
They expressed confidence that the growing movement around Attorney Charles Onyirimba reflects an increasing desire among the people for a new era of purposeful, people-centred and development-driven representation.
With political realignments gradually taking shape ahead of 2027, many attendees expressed optimism that the Imo North Senatorial election will provide the people of Okigwe Zone with an opportunity to redefine their political future by electing leaders on the basis of competence rather than party affiliation.
