Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has urged Nigerians to pray for their political leaders, admitting that politicians bear primary responsibility for the country’s challenges.
Obi made the call on Sunday while speaking at a thanksgiving service marking the 50th anniversary of Oyo State, held at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Anglican Church, Aremo, Ibadan.
Addressing the congregation, the former Anambra State governor said Nigeria’s persistent problems stem not from a lack of resources but from leadership failure.
“I want to make a request from Nigerians. Please remember us politicians in your prayers. We are the problem of Nigeria, not anyone else,” Obi said.
He added that the country’s crisis is rooted in governance rather than poverty.
“Nigeria is not a poor country; it is poorly governed. Pray that God will touch our hearts so that we use public money for public good. That is what Nigeria needs,” he said.
Following the event, Obi took to X to thank Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, for the opportunity to speak at the anniversary service. He recalled that shortly after Makinde assumed office, the governor invited him to address the state’s maiden executive council retreat, where discussions focused extensively on leadership and governance.
Obi noted that Makinde has remained consistent with the principles discussed during that engagement, praising his approach to governance.
According to him: “Beyond the visible infrastructure development across the state, the governor’s performance is widely discussed and appreciated by Oyo people wherever they are.”
