President Bola Tinubu’s reign as the chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government ends today, Sunday, July 7, 2024.
The sub-regional body is currently holding its 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority at the Presidential Villa in Abuja where Tinubu is expected to handover the reins of authority to another leader.
Tinubu, who assumed leadership of ECOWAS in July 2023 when he was unanimously elected as chairman at the 63rd Ordinary Session in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, faced daunting challenges during his tenure.
He was confronted by military coups in Niger Republic, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Guinea, which resulted in the imposition of sanctions. The sanctions were later lifted by the sub-regional body though.
However, a plus for Tinubu’s tenure was the successful 2024 Senegalese election, mostly because of a dialogue among stakeholders, which he facilitated.
