The management of Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, EKSUTH, has kicked out a surgeon for allegedly removing the kidney of a patient at the health facility.
This followed the submission of the report of a Panel of Enquiry set up to look into the issue.
The seven-member panel, which was chaired by Professor Francis Faduyile, was constituted about a fortnight ago, following the complaint of one Joshua Afolayan, who had undergone a surgical procedure at EKSUTH.
Dr Oyebanji Filani, the state Commissioner for Health and Human Services, in a statement on Friday, after the investigation panel had submitted it’s report, announced that the offending surgeon would be dismissed.
Filani also stated that the state government would take responsibility for lAfolayan’s transplant expenses.
“The surgeon who had primary responsibility for the surgery is to be dismissed EKSUTH with immediate effect,” the health commissioner announced, adding: “All members of the surgical team present in the theatre on the day of the operation are to be suspended for one month, pending further administrative review.
“The Ekiti State Government will bear full cost of a new kidney transplant for Mr Joshua Afolayan and also take responsibility for his post-transplant care and transplant-related medical maintenance for two years.
“In line with the recommendations of the Panel, a comprehensive reorganisation of relevant departments within EKSUTH will be undertaken to strengthen clinical governance, accountability, and patient safety.”
