A 49-year-old man is now in the custody of the Anambra State Police Command
for allegedly killing his 68-year-old mother.
According to Police Tochukwu Ikenga, a Superintendent of police and the command’s spokesperson, who confirmed the incident in Onitsha, the tragedy happened at Amudo Village in Aguata Local Government Area of the state.
According to Ikenga, police operatives attached to the Ekwulobia Divisional Police Station arrested the suspect on Friday, about 1:40 p.m. over the alleged murder of his mother, who was identified as Mrs Dorathy Anyaji.
Ikenga added that the suspect, who resided with the deceased, also attempted to take his own life after killing his mother.
He explained that a disagreement over money was the cause of the murder.
“Operatives recovered one axe at the scene. Preliminary investigations reveal that the incident stemmed from a dispute over money made from a cassava business,” the police mouthpiece said.
“The suspect had accused his mother of dishonesty.”
Ikenga further disclosed that though the suspect was in the custody of the police, he had also been placed under close observation to avert another suicide attempt and would have his day in court at the end of the investigation.
