A 21-year student, who was simply identified as Wu Xu has eight of his fellow students and wounded 17 others in a knife attack.
The suspect was frustrated after failing a vocational skill exam at a vocational school, Wuxi Vocational Institute of Arts and Technology, located in the eastern Chinese city of Wuxi.
The institute offers courses in art, design, ceramics, and fashion, among others.
According to the Police, the student could not graduate and was also not satisfied with the amount he was being paid as an intern.
Disillusioned, he decided to vent his frustrations by attacking his fellow students on Saturday.
According to the police, eight people were killed and 17 others wounded in the Saturday, November 16, knife attack.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect, who was meant to graduate this year, acted in anger after failing his exams.
“He returned to the school to express his anger and commit these murders. Was motivated by “failing (an) exam, not receiving a graduation certificate, and dissatisfaction with internship compensation,” police said, adding that the suspect had confessed.
Videos from the scene showed several people lying motionless on the ground, some of them surrounded by onlookers as screams are heard in the background.
Police said emergency services were fully mobilised to treat the wounded and provide follow-up care for those affected by the attack.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, November 9, as reported by Gilgil Sub-County Police Commander Winstone Mwakio.
According to Mwakio, the suspect was one of four students recently allowed back to school to sit for their exams after a suspension because of disciplinary issues.
The altercation reportedly began when the suspect and victim discovered their belongings damaged upon their return to the institution, reigniting past tensions.
Following the altercation, the prime suspect fled, allegedly taking with him the knife used in the stabbing.
Several injured people were seeing lying on the street after the attack while others rushed to help.
Sympathisers have been laying bouquet of flowers at the entrance to the college to mourn the victims.
The attack was the second in a week following the incident of a man who drove his car into people at a sports facility in the southern city of Zhuhai, leaving 35 people dead and 43 injured.
In recent times, China has witnessed several cases of knife attacks which have claimed lives. It is recalled that in October, a man allegedly attacked children with a knife at a school in Beijing leaving five people wounded.
Likewise in September, a man frustrated because of his financial challenges took his frustration to the street and killed three people in a Shanghai supermarket, and injured 15 others, while another Japanese schoolboy was killed after he was stabbed on his way to school in the southern city of Shenzhen.
