The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has said it excluded the Labour Party from its refresher training for uploading party agents ahead of the Edo and Ondo States governorship elections because Julius Abure’s tenure as the National Chairman of the party expired in June 2024.
Responding through a counter-affidavit filed in response to the Labour Party’s suit challenging its exclusion INEC reiterated that the Labour Party’s leadership, including Abure, is no longer valid, adding that the Commission did not recognise the party’s March 2024 National Convention, where Abure claims he was to re-eleced as the chairman.
The Electoral umpire insisted that the said convention contravened the Nigerian Constitution and Electoral Act.
According to INEC, it only deals with parties that have valid leadership.
INEC’s legal team, led by Tanko Inuwa, SAN, in a written address argued that the Labour Party cannot get the declaratory reliefs it seeks based on mere admissions.
They further submitted that the Labour Party lacked a valid leadership that INEC can engage since it has failed to comply with the extant legal frameworks in conducting its national convention.
Consequently, INEC insisted that the Labour Party is not entitled to the reliefs sought and prayed the court to dismiss the suit.
