The race for the Imo North Senatorial District is beginning to take a new turn, with Action Democratic Party (ADP) senatorial candidate, Attorney Charles Onyirimba, placing a woman with a reputation for grassroots mobilisation at the centre of his 2027 campaign machinery.
Onyirimba has appointed Mrs. Favour Nwelue as Director-General of his Campaign Council, handing her responsibility for coordinating the campaign’s political and grassroots operations as preparations intensify across Okigwe Zone.
The appointment is significant not only because of the strategic responsibility attached to the office, but also because Nwelue becomes the second woman known to have occupied the position of Director-General of a major Imo North senatorial campaign organisation.
She follows Mrs. Love Ineh, who previously served as Director-General of the campaign organisation of former Imo North lawmaker in the Red Chamber, Senator Frank Ibezim.
Nwelue’s emergence is expected to inject fresh energy into the Onyirimba campaign at a critical stage of the 2027 political cycle. Her supporters and political associates describe her as an astute political organiser with a strong grasp of grassroots dynamics and an ability to build relationships beyond conventional party structures.
For a senatorial contest spanning six local government areas, that experience could prove crucial.
The new Director-General is expected to play a central role in strengthening the campaign’s ward and community structures, coordinating mobilisation activities and ensuring that the Onyirimba message reaches voters far beyond the traditional centres of political activity.
The appointment of a woman as Director-General is yet another calculated move by Onyirimba, whose unconventional political positioning has repeatedly kept political observers guessing. He previously drew considerable attention when he intriguingly declared that he was contesting on the platform of the Okigwe Peoples Party (OPP), a phrase that became a powerful political statement, signalling that his ambition was anchored not on godfathers, political merchants or deep pockets, but on the people of Okigwe Zone, whom he regards as the true owners of the mandate.
Her appointment also appears to underline a broader strategy by the Onyirimba campaign to build its political organisation around people, communities and professional competence rather than relying solely on established party structures.
The campaign has continued to present Onyirimba as a candidate offering what it describes as a different model of representation, one anchored on competence, capacity, accountability and a stronger voice for Okigwe Zone at the National Assembly.
The choice of Nwelue comes as political activities surrounding the 2027 Imo North contest gradually gather momentum, with aspirants, political parties and emerging campaign organisations beginning to consolidate their structures ahead of the election.
A Campaign Council Built for the Six LGAs
The Onyirimba Campaign Council is an all-inclusive member body, comprising experienced politicians, technocrats and credible men and women drawn from different professional, social and community backgrounds across the six local government areas of Okigwe Zone.
Its composition is intended to combine political experience with professional competence, grassroots connections and broad-based representation.
The structure gives the campaign a presence across the diverse communities that make up the senatorial district while creating a platform for different segments of the zone to participate in the campaign.
With Nwelue now at the helm of the campaign council, the immediate challenge will be translating the organisation’s broad structure into an effective grassroots machine capable of reaching voters at ward and community levels.
That will likely place voter engagement, grassroots mobilisation, community outreach, and message development at the heart of the campaign’s next phase.
For Onyirimba, the appointment represents more than the filling of a campaign position. It signals that the 2027 contest is moving from political positioning to serious organisational groundwork.
