A 52-year-old farmer, named Wasiu Sorunke, has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old SSS1 student (whose name is being withheld).
According to the Nigerian Tribune, Sorunke claims that he was not the first man to commit this crime with the girl, but he was unfortunate enough to be caught.
The suspect, who resides in Owode Egba, was apprehended after the girl’s mother reported him to the police.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Omolola Odutola, Sorunke used to frequent a food vendor in his neighborhood and had become close to the girl’s family.
“The woman has a 14-year-old daughter who used to serve him whenever he went there to eat. She would also help her mother in the shop before going back home to do some chores and would return later to continue helping her mother.
“During a July holiday, the girl returned to the shop and informed her mother that she was unable to unlock the padlock on their room door. The mother, considering possible solutions, asked a young man who happened to be nearby for assistance. Coincidentally, the suspect was also present and offered to help.
“Viewing him as a responsible adult and a trusted acquaintance, the girl’s mother agreed to let him accompany her daughter. When he failed to open the padlock, he sought the woman’s permission to break it so that the girl could enter their room. From that moment on, he became aware of the girl’s whereabouts.
“On a separate occasion, he left his phone with the girl while she was at her mother’s shop, and she played games on it. Later, she returned the phone to him at his home, and they engaged in a sexual relationship. This continued until someone informed the mother about the situation.”
Nigerian Tribune discovered that whenever Sorunke noticed that the girl’s mother was busy attending to customers at her shop or at the canteen, he would go to her house and have sexual relations with her daughter until he was satisfied.
On other occasions, he would invite the girl to his house for a sexual encounter. However, the situation came to light when neighbors informed the girl’s mother.
Sorunke was subsequently arrested by the police from Owode Egba Division and later transferred to the Anti-Human Trafficking unit at Oke-Ilewo area, which is led by SP Bunmi Asogbon.
In an interview with Sorunke, he told the Nigerian Tribune: “I’m a widower; I lost my wife two years ago. I had four children but I’m left with one, a daughter. She’s 20 years old, married with a child and pregnant with the second one.
“I was taken into custody because I began a sexual relationship with the 14-year-old daughter of the food vendor I frequented. I had been getting close with their family, and one day the mother asked me to help her open a locked door in her room that her daughter couldn’t unlock.
“After completing the task at their house, I asked the food vendor’s daughter if she was already sexually active, and she confirmed it. That’s when we started engaging in sexual activities. She would come to my place, and I would go to her mother’s house for our encounters.
“When the mother found out, she reported to the police that I had violated her daughter. I argued that I hadn’t done so, as she was not a virgin when we met. The mother insisted that her daughter was too young to be taken advantage of, but I maintained that I was not the first man in her daughter’s life. Nevertheless, I was arrested.
“When we got to the police station, we were to go for a medical examination to get a doctor’s report. It was confirmed that her hymen is no longer intact.”
The suspect, seemingly oblivious to any wrongdoing, persisted in claiming that he was not the first person to have sexual relations with the girl.
He admitted to having a woman he was pursuing for marriage and another woman he was casually dating.
However, he confessed that he was tempted to engage in a sexual relationship with the girl due to their close proximity in the same neighborhood.
He acknowledged his own promiscuity, stating that he had begun a relationship with the girl in July.
