Relief swept across Oyo State on Friday as the pupils and teachers abducted from a school in Orire Local Government Area regained their freedom after spending more than 50 days in captivity.
The announcement was made by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a brief post on X.
“Finally, the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Orire, Oyo, have been freed by their abductors,” he wrote, adding that more details would be released later.
The victims were kidnapped during an attack that sparked widespread concern across Oyo State and Nigeria, renewing fears over the growing threat of school-related abductions. Their prolonged captivity drew appeals from parents, community leaders, and security stakeholders, who repeatedly called for intensified efforts to secure their release.
Although the circumstances surrounding their freedom remain unclear, authorities are expected to provide details on whether security operations, negotiations, or other interventions led to their release.
The incident had once again highlighted the security challenges facing schools in parts of Nigeria, where kidnappings for ransom have become a recurring concern in recent years.
Families of the victims and residents of Orire are expected to receive the freed pupils and teachers with relief as government officials begin the process of medical evaluation, counselling, and reunification.
Security agencies have not yet announced whether any arrests were made in connection with the abduction.
