Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign from office, citing worsening economic conditions, deepening insecurity, and what he described as unfulfilled campaign promises.
The ex-governor of Anambra State made the call in a statement posted on his X account on Monday, drawing comparisons between Nigeria’s current challenges and the circumstances that reportedly prompted British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to announce plans to step down.
He argued that Nigerians are facing severe economic hardship, rising living costs, persistent power shortages, and escalating insecurity under the current administration. According to him, these realities mirror the reasons public pressure mounted against political leaders in other democracies.
The 2023 Labour Party presidential flag bearer recalled that before the 2015 general election, Tinubu had repeatedly urged former President Goodluck Jonathan to resign over insecurity and economic challenges, particularly following the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction.
He contended that the current administration should be judged by the same standards it previously applied to its predecessors.
According to Obi, President Tinubu campaigned on promises to improve electricity supply, tackle corruption, strengthen security, and enhance the welfare of Nigerians. However, he maintained that many citizens believe conditions have deteriorated rather than improved since the administration took office.
The NDC chieftain pointed to continued kidnappings, unstable power supply, inflationary pressures, and broader economic difficulties as evidence of what he termed a failure of governance.
Obi said public office should be viewed as a sacred trust and argued that leaders must be held accountable when they fail to deliver on their commitments. He maintained that a resignation by the president would send a strong signal that leadership carries consequences and responsibilities.
The latest remarks add to the growing political debate over the performance of the Tinubu administration as Nigeria continues to grapple with economic reforms, subsidy removal impacts, currency volatility, and security concerns in several parts of the country.
Since the 2023 presidential election, Obi has remained one of the most vocal opposition figures, frequently criticizing government policies and advocating what he describes as a more accountable and people-focused approach to governance.
His latest call is expected to generate fresh political reactions from both supporters and defenders of the Tinubu administration as discussions over governance, economic recovery, and national security continue to dominate Nigeria’s political landscape.
