Tragedy and tension gripped the Umulogho community in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State after a female nursing student, identified as Wendy Achumba, was reportedly found dead inside her apartment under disturbing circumstances.
The deceased, said to be an indigene of Ngwa in Abia State, had recently completed her midwifery programme and was undergoing post-basic nursing training at the College of Nursing, Umuadara Umulogho before the shocking incident occurred.
Residents said panic erupted in the area after the young student failed to leave her room or respond to repeated knocks and phone calls throughout the day. Concerned neighbours reportedly became suspicious when all efforts to reach her proved unsuccessful.
According to community sources, residents eventually forced the apartment door open, only to discover the student lying lifeless inside the room.
The circumstances surrounding the death have since sparked fear and speculation within the student community and among local residents, especially after reports emerged that the victim’s mobile phone could not be found.
One resident, who spoke anonymously due to the sensitive nature of the incident, said the community was still struggling to understand what happened.
“We don’t know who could have done this or why such a thing happened to her,” the source reportedly said.
Another resident explained that the room was reportedly still locked when neighbours raised the alarm, a development that has further deepened the mystery surrounding the case.
The incident reportedly triggered outrage among youths and students in the area, with tension escalating as some angry residents confronted security personnel who arrived at the scene.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, DSP Henry Okoye, disclosed that officers visited the apartment immediately after receiving distress reports from the community.
According to the police, the body was evacuated for further examination while detectives commenced investigations aimed at uncovering the exact circumstances surrounding the death.
The command assured residents that efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend anyone connected to the incident.
Police authorities also appealed to students and members of the public to remain calm and avoid actions capable of disrupting investigations.
One suspect has reportedly been arrested and is helping the police in the investigations.
The tragic incident has once again drawn attention to growing concerns over student safety and security around tertiary institutions in parts of Nigeria, especially in off-campus residential areas where cases of violent crimes and suspicious deaths have increasingly generated public anxiety.
