A dramatic political twist unfolded within Nigeria’s ruling party on Thursday night as Hope Uzodimma was reportedly removed as Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, following an emergency meeting of governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in Abuja.
The development came barely hours after the Imo State governor publicly represented APC governors during the submission of President Bola Tinubu’s presidential nomination and expression of interest forms ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
According to reports monitored from Abuja, the decision to relieve Uzodimma of the influential position was reached during an extraordinary late-night meeting attended by nearly 20 governors elected on the platform of the APC and allied progressive blocs. The gathering reportedly drew governors and senior political figures from several states, including Ogun, Bayelsa, Enugu and others, amid growing internal consultations within the ruling party.
The sudden leadership shake-up has triggered fresh speculation over emerging power realignments inside the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections. Political observers believe the move may signal widening consultations among influential stakeholders over the future direction of the party, especially as discussions intensify around succession politics, zoning calculations and strategic control of the party structure.
Uzodimma, who has been one of President Tinubu’s vocal allies within the governors’ bloc, rose to national prominence through his active role in APC mobilization and intra-party negotiations. His position as Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum placed him at the center of key policy coordination and political strategy among governors elected on the party’s platform.
The Progressive Governors Forum has over the years evolved into one of the most powerful caucuses within the APC, often shaping consensus positions on national issues, electoral strategy, leadership contests and federal-state relations. Any change in its leadership is therefore viewed as politically significant within Nigeria’s power matrix.
Thursday’s development has already generated intense reactions in political circles, with analysts interpreting the move as either a routine restructuring within the governors’ forum or an indication of deeper tensions among influential APC stakeholders ahead of looming political battles.
