Onyiyechi Nwokoma, s 28-year old tailor in Lagos, is to spend the next six months in jail for attacking and destroying the property of a man who turned down her marriage proposal as was prophesied by her prophet.
Alternatively, the Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. J .Ugbomoiko of the Ogba Magistrate Court, gave her an option of three months community service.
Trouble started when onyinyechi proposed marriage to a photographer, Steven Eze, claiming that her prophet prophesied that he is her husband but was rejected.
The convicted Onyiyechi was arraigned before the Court for disturbing the man’s peace by attacking and destroying his property at his shop located at Church Street, Apex area of Alagbado, Lagos, where he owns a photographic studio and Onyiyechi as well owns a tailoring shop.
According to the Police, Onyiyechi met the man, Eze, at his shop and told him that she went to a church and her prophet told her that he was her husband and he should marry her.
She also told Eze that she had enough money and would foot the bill for the marriage rites and ceremonies.
However, Eze declined, saying he was not ready for marriage but added that even if he actually wanted to get married, she was not the kind of woman he would like to get married.
Onyiyechi insisted that Eze must get married to her as was purportedly prophesied by her prophet and resorted to threatening the man over the marriage issue.
To get Eze to marry her, Onyinyechi wentto his shop and destroyed some of his properties on three different occasions in order to force him to get married to her.
Eze got scared and informed his family members about what was happening, leading to a report being lodged to the Police at Alagbado Division.
Consequently, Onyinyechi was arrested, detained and then warned to desist from disturbing or destroying Eze’s property but she was not deterred.
She was then charged before the Court for the alleged offence under the Criminal Laws of the State where she pleaded guilty as charged and confessed to while accepting before the Magistrate that she knowing what she was doing to enable Eze to get married to her as prophesied by her Prophet.
Inspector Lucky Ihiehie, the prosecutor, asked the court to sentence her accordingly because she had already pleaded guilty to the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. Ugbomoiko, found her guilty as charged and sentenced her accordingly.
She was moved to the correctional centre at Kirikiri town, Lagos, to serve her jail sentence.
