As preparations gradually gather momentum for future electoral contests, the Senatorial Candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) for Okigwe Zone, Attorney Charles Onyirimba, has called on eligible citizens across the district to register for their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and actively participate in elections, describing voter apathy as one of the greatest threats to democratic progress.
Speaking through a public message made available to Panorama News, Onyirimba invoked the timeless warning of the ancient Greek philosopher, Plato, who observed that “the price good people pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men.”
According to the legal luminary, the quote remains as relevant today as it was centuries ago, especially in societies where citizens often withdraw from the electoral process because of frustration, cynicism, or the belief that their votes will not count.
He noted that while many citizens complain about poor governance, insecurity, unemployment, and underdevelopment, meaningful change can only occur when people translate their concerns into political participation.
“The PVC is not merely a card; it is the most powerful democratic instrument in the hands of the ordinary citizen. It is the lawful tool through which people can reward good leadership or reject bad governance,” he stated.
Onyirimba urged Ndi Okigwe to register en masse and ensure they collect their voter cards ahead of future elections. He further emphasised that obtaining a PVC alone is not enough, stressing that citizens must also come out massively on election day to exercise their civic responsibility.
He warned that voter apathy only creates opportunities for election manipulators and weakens the collective voice of the people.
The ADP candidate also encouraged voters to remain vigilant and lawfully defend their votes, insisting that democracy flourishes when citizens actively participate and peacefully insist that their mandates are respected.
“For Okigwe Zone to secure the future it desires, its people must refuse to be spectators. The future belongs to those who vote, participate, and hold leadership accountable,” Onyirimba concluded.
