The legal battle surrounding former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, is set to enter a decisive phase today as the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) prepares to arraign him before the Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna over alleged corruption-related offences.
The move signals a shift from days of uncertainty and mounting criticism over El-Rufai’s continued detention without formal charges, a situation that had stirred legal and political tensions across the country.
In recent days, pressure had intensified on authorities to either release or formally charge the former governor. Among the most vocal critics was the African Democratic Congress, which publicly demanded adherence to due process, warning that prolonged detention without trial undermines constitutional safeguards.
Civil society voices and political observers echoed similar concerns, describing the delay in arraignment as a troubling precedent in a democratic system where the rule of law is expected to prevail.
Adding to the chorus of criticism, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) condemned what it termed the “prolonged and unjustified” detention of El-Rufai by security agencies.
