A thunderous blast on Wednesday ripped through the early morning calm as an improvised explosive device detonated within the Bayelsa State Secretariat Complex in Yenagoa, plunging the government district into panic and triggering an immediate security lockdown.

The explosion, which occurred at about 6:00 a.m., shattered the stillness of the day and forced the rapid deployment of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, tactical squads, and drone surveillance teams.

Major access roads were swiftly cordoned off, as operatives combed the premises for further threats, heightening tension among civil servants and nearby residents.

In a dramatic twist, security agents arrested a 60-year-old suspect, identified as Pentecost Elijah from Otuan Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, at the scene.

During a thorough sweep of the complex, operatives also discovered a second unexploded IED, which was successfully rendered safe, a chilling indication of the potential devastation narrowly averted.

Authorities confirmed that no lives were lost and no property was damaged, even as investigations intensify into what officials describe as a grave security breach.
