Shock and outrage have gripped Omifon community in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State following the arrest of a 40-year-old landlady, Nafisat Lateef, for allegedly poisoning her tenant’s three-year-old son.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed that the disturbing incident stemmed from a disagreement between the suspect and the child’s mother, Rofiat, who resides in the same compound.
According to police accounts, the incident occurred on Tuesday, February 4, 2026, at about 8:30 a.m., when Lateef allegedly administered a liquid substance suspected to be poisonous to the toddler, identified as Abdulrasheed.
Moments after ingesting the substance, the child reportedly began vomiting violently, prompting an emergency rush to a nearby hospital where he received urgent medical attention and was stabilised.
Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said detectives acted swiftly after receiving the complaint.
According to Jimoh: “The suspect allegedly gave the victim a liquid substance suspected to be poisonous following a misunderstanding with the complainant, who is her tenant.
“Upon receiving the report, police operatives carried out a swift, intelligence-led operation which led to the arrest of the suspect.”
The police spokesperson added that investigations are ongoing, while the suspect remains in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of preliminary inquiries.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns over domestic disputes escalating into violence, especially against vulnerable children, with residents calling for justice and stricter deterrence against such acts.
