A suspected kidnapping syndicate operating in parts of Owerri has suffered a major setback, following the arrest of a commercial motorcycle operator, also known as Okada rider, believed to be a central link in the gang’s operations.
The suspect was apprehended in the World Bank area of Owerri, the Imo State capital, during a targeted security operation that uncovered what police sources described as a weapons hub, supplying criminal gangs involved in abductions across the city and nearby communities.
Investigators allege that the motorcycle operator used his daily commercial activities as cover to gather intelligence, transport criminals, and facilitate movement before and after kidnapping operations. Security officials say preliminary findings indicate the suspect worked closely with multiple cells rather than acting alone.
During the operation, officers reportedly recovered 15 AK-47 rifles and a large quantity of ammunition concealed at the suspect’s hideout. The arms are believed to have been deployed in previous kidnapping incidents and other violent crimes within the state.
The development has triggered cautious optimism among residents of the World Bank axis, an area that has witnessed repeated security breaches in recent months. Local traders and commuters described the arrest as a rare but welcome breakthrough in the battle against organised crime.
Reacting to the arrest, the spokesperson of the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident but noted that the operation was executed by operatives attached to the Nigeria Police Force headquarters in Abuja.
“The arrest was carried out by officers from the Force Headquarters. The Imo State Command has been briefed and is working with them as investigations continue,” Okoye said.
He disclosed that intelligence-led follow-up operations are already underway to identify additional suspects, trace the source of the recovered weapons, and dismantle the broader kidnapping network linked to the case.
Police authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and continue sharing credible information, assuring the public that sustained operations will be carried out to neutralise criminal groups threatening peace and economic activity in the state.
