The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested 10 suspects in connection with the gruesome killing and beheading of four persons during a violent border clash in Okporojọr Village, Oso Edda Community, Edda Local Government Area of the state.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday, stemmed from a renewed outbreak of a long-running land dispute between Oso Edda in Edda LGA and Ndukwe Community in Amasiri, Afikpo Local Government Area.
The confrontation reportedly escalated into extreme violence, leaving three men and one woman dead.
During an on-the-spot assessment visit to the affected community on Saturday, the Commissioner of Police, Mrs. Adaku Uche-Anya, confirmed the arrests and detailed the scale of destruction caused by the attack.
She said several mud houses were set ablaze, windows of a church building were shattered, and harvested paddy rice was destroyed during the rampage.
According to the police commissioner, the command swiftly deployed tactical squads to the area immediately after receiving reports of the violence, a move she said helped to restore calm and prevent further escalation.
Mrs. Uche-Anya commiserated with residents of Okporojọr Village over the loss of lives and property, assuring them that the police would pursue the case to its logical conclusion. She stressed that investigations were ongoing and vowed that all those involved in the killings would be brought to justice.
She further assured the community that security presence in the area would be sustained until lasting peace is restored, while warning against self-help and the temptation to take the law into private hands.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Edda Local Government Area, Mr. Chima Ekumankama, commended the Ebonyi State Government and the Nigeria Police Force for their prompt intervention, describing it as crucial in stabilising the situation and preventing a wider breakdown of law and order.
