Okigwe (Imo North) Senatorial District has intensified its search for peace in the troubled area.
A great throng of eminent sons and daughters of the zone converged on Obowo Local Government Area, where it held its Peace and Unity Summit.
The broad theme of the summit, “Peace, Unity & Collective Progress for the Okigwe Zone”, was unmistakable in its bold declaration.
Attendees included traditional rulers, community leaders, youth representatives, women’s groups, religious leaders, local government officials, and other stakeholders drawn from the six LGAs that constitute the Okigwe senatorial zone.
The objectives of the summit include addressing the lingering fragmentation and division within the Okigwe Zone, especially among youth and leadership strata; fostering a renewed spirit of collaboration, solidarity and peace across the zone, with Obowo as host location; setting a shared agenda for socio‐economic development, with unity and peace as foundational prerequisites; and creating space for dialogue: identifying challenges, agreeing on joint actions, and committing to follow‐through.
At the end of the summit, all participants signed a communiqué pledging to promote peace, support each other’s development efforts, avoid unnecessary rivalry and jealousy, and report quarterly on progress.
The Okigwe Peace & Unity Summit marks a positive and strategic step for the zone. By emphasising social cohesion, regional solidarity, and shared development, stakeholders have laid a foundation for deeper collaborative work.
In sum, the summit opened the door to peace and unity; now the participants must walk through it together.
A major highlight of the event was the pride of place accorded to Attorney Charles Onyirimba, whose name was on the lips of most people and was openly endorsed as the most suitable man to send to the Senate to represent the Okigwe Zone in 2027.
Onyirimba, a US-based legal luminary, was, however, not present at the gathering, but his image loomed large. Some youth even carried banners bearing his image and openly rooted for him.
In a full-page goodwill message, Onyirimba had charged Okigwe people to embrace peace and unity, saying: “No more empty promises. Representatives must be held accountable; looking forward to new frontiers opened to our people’s advantage and happiness.”
