The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, has announced the killing of eight of its officers in an attack by gunmen, who were suspected to be kidnappers in Edo.
The attackers had on Friday night, ambushed the deceased officers at Okpella, and also left another four severely injured.
One Chinese national was also abducted while four others were rescued unhurt.
Afolabi Babawale, the NSCDC the spokesperson of the Corps in a statement on disclosed that the operatives were deployed to provide security for expatriates attached to the BUA Cement Company.
However, the corps added that the team’s convoy was ambushed by heavily-armed gunmen during a routine patrol.
According to the statement, Prof. Ahmed Audi, the NSCDC Commandant-General, while expressing sorrow over the huge losses, described the incident as grievous, assuring that their sacrifices would not be forgotten.
“The labour, commitment and patriotism displayed by our operatives will forever be remembered,” the statement partly read.
“The corps stands firmly with their families at this moment of grief.”
“The commandant-general condemned the attack in strong terms, assuring that the NSCDC, in collaboration with other security agencies, is combing forests in Etsako East to rescue the abducted expatriate and apprehend the perpetrators.
“The corps remains unwavering in its statutory mandate of protecting critical national assets and infrastructure.
“This cowardly attack will not deter us from carrying out our duties,” it said.
The corps promised to pay condolence visits to the bereaved families and ensure burial of the slain officers with full honours, adding that it would bear the cost of treating the injured personnel in hospital.
