Many dead as female suicide bomber detonates IED at wedding party

Tragedy on Saturday hit Marrarraban, Gwoza town, Borno State, when a female suicide bomber detonated an Improvised Explosive Device, IED, at a wedding venue.

 It was reported than an unconfirmed number of guests died in the blast that left several others with varying degrees of injuries.

A survivor told Channels TV that the bomber was carrying a baby on her back when she stormed the venue and detonated the IED.

The number of dead persons cannot be immediately ascertained, but score of persons who were injured are receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Gwoza.

However,  Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, put the casualty figures at seven dead, 16 injured.

Makama said the suicide bomber was identified as a lady in her early 20s, adding that the injured ones were taken to the hospital in Gwoza.

Emergency services were rushed to the scene to rescue those injured and convey them to the hospitals in Gwoza.

Yusuf Lawal, the Borno State Commissioner of Police (CP), confirmed to reporters that the attack was carried out by a female suicide bomber.

Lawal said he was informed by the Divisional Police Officer in Gwoza, that at least six people were killed, with 15 others evacuated to the hospital.
