The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the apex socio-cultural organization for the Igbo people of Nigeria, on Friday elected a new crop of leaders to steer the affairs of the group.
A statement from Chief Agbeze Ireke Kalu Onuma on behalf of the Media Team of the Election Committee, disclosed that after the election, which was held at the Old Government Lodge, Abakiliki Road, Enugu, Senator Azubuike Mbata emerged as the newly elected President General.
Mbata, who hails from Rivers State, succeeded Nze Fidelis Ozichukwu.
His victory marks a significant moment for the organization, signaling a new era of progress, unity, and development.
The event was graced by the presence of several prominent figures from across Igboland, including the Governors of Abia, Anambra, Imo, and Enugu states.
However , the Governor of Ebonyi State, who was unable to attend, sent his Deputy to represent him.
The active participation of the five governors demonstrated their strong support for the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide and its crucial role in Igbo society.
Furthermore, their presence underscored the importance of unity and collaboration among Igbo leaders and participation of these governors further solidified the legitimacy and significance of the newly elected leadership.
Mbata, the newly elected President General, in his acceptance speech, expressed his gratitude to the Igbo people for their unwavering support and pledged to work tirelessly to advance the interests of the Igbo nation.  He emphasised the importance of unity, economic empowerment, and political inclusion.
The elections were widely seen as peaceful and transparent, reflecting the commitment of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide to democratic principles.
The organisation looks forward to a productive period under its new leadership, focusing on strengthening Igbo unity, promoting Igbo culture, and advocating for the rights and interests of the Igbo people wherever they reside.

The election of the new leadership of Ohanaeze was not without drama, as former Inspector General if Police, Mike Okiro, had to withdraw from the race for the presidency, following a court action, challenging his eligibility for the office.
Some group of people had sued him, contending that he is from Imo State and not Rivers whose turn it was to produce the new president.
