The new Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has cancelled the 18-year admission benchmark into tertiary institutions in the country stipulated by his predecessor.
Alausa gave a hint to this on Wednesday while speaking in his inaugural ministerial press conference in Abuja, pointing out the likely review of the country’s education policy.
On the other hand, he insisted on the Federal overnment’s decision to void over 22,700 “fake” degree certificates obtained by Nigerians from some universities in neighbouring Togo and Benin Republic.
Recall that the former Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, had July, directed the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, to admit only 18 years old candidates into tertiary institutions, accusing the universities of enrolling underage candidates and thereby distorting both the university and the education systems.
However, following widespread condemnation if the policy, the Federal Government reversed itself and deferred the 18-year admission benchmark in tertiary institutions policy’s take-off to next year.
