President Bola Tinubu on Monday condemned the violent acts that trailed the outcome of the Rivers State local government elections on Saturday.
The All Peoples Party, APP, had produced 22 out of the 23 newly elected council chairmen, who were subsequently sworn in by the state governor, Sim Fubara on Sunday.
Angered by the outcome of the council poll, some hoodlums on Monday, invaded many Rivers LGA secretariats to prevent the chairmen from assuming duties after the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetekun, ordered the police to unseal the Secretariat’s and withdraw.
The attackers destroyed the property of some of the councils, even setting fire to some.
President Tinubu in reaction through a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, expressed worries over the arson and explosion in the state.
He urged the state governor, political leaders and their foot soldiers to exercise restraint and observe the rule of law.
The president also gave marching orders to the security operatives in the state to immediately restore law, and order in the state.
“President Bola Tinubu has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara, political leaders and their supporters in Rivers State to exercise restraint and uphold the rule of law,” the statement read.
“In response to recent tensions following last Saturday’s local government council election, the President expressed deep concern over reports of arson and explosions in the state.
“He urged all political actors to de-escalate the situation and discourage their supporters from engaging in violence or destructive actions. President Tinubu directed the police to restore and maintain peace, law, and order immediately.
“While instructing law enforcement agencies to bring the situation under control, he emphasised the need to ensure the security of public institutions.
“President Tinubu said government facilities built with public funds must be safeguarded from vandalism. He stressed that self-help has no place in a democratic system, especially after 25 years of continuous democracy.
“According to President Tinubu, the judiciary can settle all political disputes, and the outcome of this election should be no exception.”
