Scores of bandits in the Gudiri community of Bashar District in the Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State were killed or injured in a recent onslaught by operatives of Operation Safe Haven, OPSH, in the state.
The OPSH attack followed the kidnap and killing of a police officer in the Kampani community of Bashar District.
The remains of the slain cop were subsequently found in a nearby bush.
Operatives of OPSH raided the bandits’ camp at about 5:30 p.m. where a fierce gun duel, which lasted for several hours, ensued.
The superior firepower of the OPSH operatives overwhelmed the bandits and recovered over one hundred cattle from their den.
A hunter who accompanied the security operatives to the bandits’ hideout disclosed that several bandits were killed while many others escaped with various injuries, adding that three soldiers sadly lost paid the supreme price during the attack.
“It was a fierce battle. The bandits initially tried to resist the military but were overpowered by superior firepower,” he said.
“More than 15 bandits were killed, and many others fled with gunshot wounds. Three soldiers also died in the process. We recovered more than one hundred cattle from them.”
Major Samson Zhalom, the Media Officer of OPSH, could not be reached to comment on the incident.
