An immigration officer, who was part of the security team sent to disperse a crowd of protesters in the Bulunkutu area of Maiduguri, Borno State capital, accidentally shot himself thrice on the foot while blocking protesters.
The sound of the gunshots had provoked the protesters, who became uncontrollable, thinking that one of them had been shot.
However, they calmed down after realising that it was an immigration personnel that had shot himself.
The officer, whose identity has not been disclosed, was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The protesters were demonstrating against the government’s poor handling of the insurgency in the region, and high cost of living, among other issues confronting the people.
Security operatives comprising a joint patrol team of the police, military, immigration, DSS, Civil Defence barricaded the Bulumkutu Railway Junction to bar the protesters from spilling into the Maiduguri metropolis.
