As political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections, conversations about leadership, representation, and the future of Okigwe Zone have become increasingly prominent. Among the voices attracting considerable attention is that of Attorney Charles Chibuike Onyirimba, a respected legal practitioner, accomplished intellectual, Diaspora advocate, and emerging political figure whose growing popularity continues to resonate across communities in Okigwe (Imo North) Senatorial District.<\/p>\n
In a political environment often dominated by powerful structures, entrenched interests, and the influence of political godfathers, Onyirimba’s decision to pitch his tent with the Action Democratic Party (ADP) has generated widespread interest and sparked important conversations about the direction of politics in Okigwe Zone.<\/p>\n
For Onyirimba, however, the decision was never merely about party affiliation. Rather, he sees it as a deliberate choice to embrace a platform that offers independence of thought, direct accountability to the people, and the freedom to pursue a development-focused agenda without the constraints of political empires.<\/p>\n
In this exclusive interview, he speaks candidly about his political philosophy, the reasons behind his choice of ADP, the challenges facing Okigwe Zone, and his vision for a future built on competent leadership, inclusive development, youth empowerment, and genuine representation. He also addresses concerns about party structures, electoral realities, and why he believes Okigwe people, not political machinery, remain the ultimate custodians of democratic power.<\/p>\n
Your decision to join the Action Democratic Party surprised many people who expected you to align with a bigger political movement. Why did you make that choice?<\/strong><\/p>\n Leadership must never be reduced to the size of a political platform. For me, this journey is first and foremost about the people of Okigwe, their pain, their neglect, their lost opportunities, and the urgent need for genuine rescue and development.<\/p>\n Yes, I know many people expected me to move toward one of the larger political parties because that has become the culture in Nigeria. But I asked myself a deeper question: do I want to merely belong to a structure, or do I want the freedom to pursue ideas and policies that can truly transform the lives of my people?<\/p>\n That reflection led me to the ADP. I saw a platform that gives room for independent thinking, people-oriented leadership, accountability, and purposeful service without the suffocating weight of entrenched political interests.<\/p>\n Sometimes smaller platforms provide greater freedom to genuinely serve the people.<\/p>\n Many assumed you would naturally align with the movement associated with Peter Obi because people believe your ideas are similar. Why did that not happen?<\/p>\n I have tremendous respect for Peter Obi and what he represents in terms of competence, prudence, accountability, and people-focused governance. I believe many Nigerians, especially young people, connected with his message because they are tired of politics without vision and leadership without compassion.<\/p>\n In many respects, yes, we share similar ideals, the belief that governance should improve lives, empower citizens, restore dignity, create opportunities, and place the welfare of the people above political greed.<\/p>\n But I also understood something important. If I had chosen to move directly into that political space, many people would immediately dismiss my mission by saying I was merely riding on Obi\u2019s popularity or hiding under another man\u2019s movement. I did not want the focus to become political dependency or borrowed influence.<\/p>\n I wanted the people of Okigwe to evaluate me based on my own ideas, my own plans, my own competence, and my own vision for rescue and transformation.<\/p>\n The important thing is not necessarily the platform or the route. The important thing is whether one genuinely carries the values of responsible leadership wherever one stands. If you truly believe in accountability, transparency, economic empowerment, and human-centred governance, you should be able to practice those ideals from any credible platform.<\/p>\n Some critics say ADP lacks the structure to compete effectively. Are you worried about that?<\/strong><\/p>\n Not at all. Nigerians must begin to rethink this unhealthy obsession with \u201cstructure\u201d while communities continue to suffer. What exactly is the value of structure if the people remain poor, unemployed, insecure, abandoned, and hopeless?<\/p>\n For too long, politics has been dominated by structures that exist mainly to preserve power rather than improve lives. We have elevated party machinery above human welfare. We have glorified political empires while ordinary citizens sink deeper into hardship.<\/p>\n I believe the real structure in any democracy should be the people themselves.<\/p>\n If the people are convinced that a leader is sincere, competent, accessible, and genuinely committed to development, they can build a stronger movement than any artificially constructed political machinery.<\/p>\n My confidence does not come from noisy structures. It comes from the belief that the people of Okigwe are intelligent enough to recognise sincerity, competence, and vision when they see it. My structure is built on Okigwe people.<\/p>\n What exactly do you think Okigwe has been lacking politically?<\/strong><\/p>\n Representation with purpose.<\/p>\n Too often, politics has become transactional instead of transformational. Many leaders are manipulated into office or emerge with impressive slogans during campaigns, but once elected, the connection between leadership and the people disappears.<\/p>\n Okigwe deserves representation that is visible, responsive, strategic, and development-oriented. Representation should not merely mean occupying office. It should mean actively fighting for infrastructure, economic opportunities, quality education, healthcare, youth empowerment, security, agricultural support, and sustainable growth.<\/p>\n Our people are tired of symbolic leadership. They want practical results.<\/p>\n We have brilliant youths without opportunities. We have communities with enormous potential but inadequate investment. We have hardworking traders, farmers, professionals, and entrepreneurs who simply need enabling conditions to thrive.<\/p>\n Leadership must become a bridge between the people and progress, not merely a ladder for personal ambition.<\/p>\n You often speak about freedom from political encumbrances. What exactly do you mean by that?<\/strong><\/p>\n In many political environments today, leaders are heavily constrained by internal interests, godfather pressures, hidden agreements, and political debts. Before some elected officials can even think about serving the people, they are already overwhelmed and burdened by obligations to powerful individuals and entrenched political networks.<\/p>\n That situation weakens governance because decisions become influenced by political survival rather than public interest.<\/p>\n I wanted a platform where I could remain focused primarily on the people, their needs, their aspirations, and their future, without constantly navigating suffocating political entanglements.<\/p>\n The ADP offers me the opportunity to pursue a people-driven agenda with greater independence and clarity of purpose. My loyalty must first be to the people of Okigwe, not to political merchants.<\/p>\n What specific areas would you prioritise if given the opportunity to serve?<\/strong><\/p>\n My vision is centred on rebuilding confidence between leadership and the people.<\/p>\n First is economic empowerment. Our youths cannot continue wandering without opportunities while talent wastes away. We need aggressive support for entrepreneurship, skills development, technology, agriculture, and local enterprise growth.<\/p>\n Second is infrastructure and connectivity. Development cannot thrive where roads are abandoned, communities isolated, and basic amenities neglected.<\/p>\n Third is education and human capital development. A society that neglects education mortgages its future. We must invest in the intellectual and professional capacity of our people.<\/p>\n Healthcare is another major priority. Too many families suffer because quality medical care remains inaccessible or unaffordable.<\/p>\n I am also passionate about transparency and accessibility. Leadership should not become distant from the people after elections. The people must consistently know what their representatives are doing, fighting for, and achieving.<\/p>\n Most importantly, I want to restore hope. Many citizens have become deeply cynical about politics because they no longer believe leadership can genuinely improve their lives. That trust must be rebuilt.<\/p>\n Finally, what message do you have for the people of Okigwe regarding your political journey?<\/strong><\/p>\n I ask the people to look beyond party labels and focus on substance. Let us stop worshipping political size while ignoring leadership quality.<\/p>\n This moment is bigger than politics as usual. It is about whether we want to continue recycling disappointment or whether we are ready to pursue a new direction based on competence, vision, accountability, and genuine service.<\/p>\n I did not choose this path because it was the easiest. I chose it because I believe the people deserve courageous leadership that is not afraid to think differently.<\/p>\n At the end of the day, what matters is not the loudness of a political structure. What matters is whether leadership can bring dignity, progress, opportunity, and hope back to the people.
