The worsening environmental crisis at\u00a0 the popular Orieagu Market, Umuakagu Nsu in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, has again drawn urgent appeals from concerned residents and community stakeholders to the state governor, Hope Uzodinma, and the Senator representing Okigwe Zone, Engr. Patrick Ndubueze, to intervene immediately before the situation develops into a full-scale public health disaster.<\/p>\n
What was once a beautiful community field used for Nsu Day celebrations, football competitions, religious gatherings, and socio-political events has now degenerated into a massive refuse dump and uncontrolled trading space, leaving many residents alarmed over the growing environmental decay at the heart of the community.<\/p>\n
Concerned indigenes say the situation reflects years of negligence by relevant authorities responsible for market regulation, environmental sanitation, and the collection of tolls and levies from traders operating within the area. They argue that while traders and market activities continue to generate revenue for certain authorities and individuals, little or nothing has been done to establish a proper waste management structure capable of handling the growing commercial activities around Orieagu Market.<\/p>\n
Residents insist that the continuous collection of levies from traders without corresponding investment in sanitation, waste evacuation, and environmental maintenance amounts to a grave failure of responsibility. They questioned why a market generating daily commercial activity has been allowed to descend into such unsanitary conditions without proper refuse disposal systems, designated dumping sites, or regular evacuation arrangements.<\/p>\n
Many observers noted that previous reports, suggesting that the state government had approved the removal of the refuse heaps have yet to produce visible results, even as the rubbish continues to expand after every major Orieagu market day.<\/p>\n
Community voices warn that the situation has gone beyond mere environmental nuisance and now poses serious health risks to traders, school children, worshippers, residents, and visitors to the area. They stressed that without urgent intervention, the refuse dump could become a breeding ground for disease outbreaks and environmental contamination.<\/p>\n
Stakeholders are, therefore, appealing directly to Governor Uzodinma and the Distinguished Senator Ndubueze whom they also congratulated for picking his party’s ticket to commence his reelection bid, to urgently assist the community with excavators, caterpillars, and tipper trucks to evacuate the heaps of refuse littering the area.<\/p>\n
According to community leaders, discussions had already commenced among concerned elders and stakeholders on raising funds for the immediate clean-up exercise. However, they believe government intervention would significantly ease the burden and accelerate the evacuation process.<\/p>\n
They further called on the local government authorities and all agencies responsible for market management and revenue collection to immediately establish a structured environmental sanitation system for Orieagu Market, including approved dumping locations, routine waste evacuation, and stricter sanitation enforcement measures.<\/p>\n
Residents maintain that the present condition of Orieagu is both embarrassing and unacceptable for a community with such historical and economic significance. For many, the crisis has become a painful reflection of failed environmental governance, weak public accountability, and the neglect of communal welfare despite the continuous flow of market revenues and public levies.<\/p>\n
