The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has declared May 30, 2026, as a sit-at-home day across the South-east and other parts of the old Eastern Region in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the Nigerian Civil War, also known as the Biafran War, fought between 1967 and 1970.<\/p>\n
The annual observance, often referred to by pro-Biafra groups as Biafra Heroes Memorial Day, is intended to honour civilians, soldiers, women, and children who died during the conflict that remains one of the most painful chapters in Nigeria\u2019s history.<\/p>\n
In a statement released on Sunday by IPOB\u2019s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group described the planned Sit-at-Home as a solemn memorial exercise rather than a political protest. According to the statement, residents of the South-east and Biafrans in the Diaspora are expected to observe the day quietly and respectfully.<\/p>\n
IPOB urged people to refrain from commercial activities, social gatherings, ceremonies, and public events during the observance. The group said markets, businesses, schools, and offices should remain closed as a mark of honour for those it described as fallen heroes and heroines of Biafra.<\/p>\n
The separatist organisation also called on governors across states it identifies as part of \u201cBiafraland\u201d to fly Nigerian flags at half-mast on May 30 in remembrance of victims of the civil war.<\/p>\n
The Nigerian Civil War began in July 1967, following the declaration of the Republic of Biafra by then Eastern Region leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. The war ended in January 1970 after intense fighting, starvation, and humanitarian crises that claimed millions of lives, many of them civilians.<\/p>\n
Over the years, May 30 has remained symbolic among pro-Biafra groups and supporters who use the date to remember victims of the conflict and renew calls for self-determination.<\/p>\n
However, sit-at-home orders linked to separatist agitation have also generated controversy due to their economic and security implications across the South-east.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
