Nigeria\u2019s road to the 2027 general elections is fast becoming a high-stakes security test, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) warning that rising insecurity, political violence, vote-buying and coordinated electoral disruptions could threaten the credibility, and possibly the stability, of the entire process if urgent safeguards are not enforced.<\/p>\n
The warning came in Abuja from the INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, during a strategic engagement with the Nigeria Police Force, where he described security as the \u201cdecisive backbone\u201d of any credible election, without which democratic outcomes risk collapse.<\/p>\n
Amupitan disclosed that preparations for the polls are already underway, with the commission fixing January 16, 2027, for presidential and National Assembly elections, and February 6, 2027, for governorship and state assembly elections. He noted that with political parties already holding congresses, primaries and internal negotiations, the electoral season has effectively begun\u2014alongside rising tension nationwide.<\/p>\n
He warned that Nigeria\u2019s fragile security landscape presents a direct threat to the conduct of free and fair elections, especially in areas affected by insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, separatist agitation and communal violence. According to him, without coordinated intelligence-driven intervention, the risk of disrupted voting, voter suppression and electoral violence remains dangerously high.<\/p>\n
The INEC chairman also raised concern over persistent electoral malpractice, including vote-buying, thuggery, misinformation and manipulation of public perception, describing them as corrosive forces capable of eroding public confidence in democracy and delegitimising election outcomes.<\/p>\n
He pointed to the Electoral Act 2026, which now mandates political parties to adopt direct primaries or consensus arrangements for candidate selection, warning that while the reform aims to strengthen internal democracy, it may also intensify political conflicts within parties ahead of 2027.<\/p>\n
Beyond the general elections, Amupitan highlighted the upcoming governorship polls in Ekiti State and Osun State, as well as several bye-elections, as critical early warning tests of Nigeria\u2019s electoral preparedness and security coordination.<\/p>\n
He emphasised the role of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), describing it as the operational nerve centre for election protection. He urged a shift from reactive policing to proactive intelligence gathering, early threat detection, and coordinated security deployment to protect voters, officials and electoral materials.<\/p>\n
In response, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, assured INEC that the police are fully mobilised for the electoral cycle. He revealed that nationwide threat mapping and intelligence assessments are already ongoing to identify flashpoints and prevent breakdowns of law and order.<\/p>\n
Disu listed political violence, illegal arms proliferation, cyber manipulation, fake news, voter intimidation and attacks on electoral infrastructure as key risks, adding that officers deployed for election duty would be professionally screened, trained and monitored to ensure neutrality and compliance with electoral laws.<\/p>\n
He further disclosed plans for joint security drills, inter-agency coordination, stakeholder dialogues and peace agreements among political actors aimed at reducing tensions before voting begins.<\/p>\n
With political competition intensifying and insecurity still unresolved in several regions, the warnings from both INEC and the police underscore a growing national anxiety: whether Nigeria\u2019s 2027 elections will be a democratic milestone, or a stress test for the country\u2019s fragile stability.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
