Parties are platforms, not performers. They do not build roads, legislate reforms, or feel the weight of underdevelopment. Individuals do.

One of the most troubling features of contemporary politics is the frenetic movement across party lines driven not by principle, ideology, or alignment of ideas, but by convenience and ambition. Politicians switch platforms with ease, often without asking whether the policies, values, or promises of their new political home align with the interests of the people they claim to serve. In such a system, parties become revolving doors, not ideological institutions, and the people are left with shifting loyalties instead of stable development.

The so-called “big parties” often project strength through numbers and visibility, but many times they function as bastions of cult-like followership, where loyalty to the party machine overrides accountability to the people. Within such systems, the danger is subtle but real: decision-making can tilt toward satisfying internal power blocs rather than addressing the urgent needs of the electorate. Development becomes secondary to political loyalty, and governance risks becoming transactional rather than transformational.

Across many political spaces, including Okigwe, “structure,” “big parties,” and “godfathers” are often elevated beyond their real function. Structure may amplify a candidate, but it cannot substitute competence. It may create visibility, but it cannot manufacture capacity. Governance is not delivered by platforms; it is delivered by people.

A major flaw in over-reliance on big parties is the dependence on endorsements from powerful political figures. Too often, the political stage is crowded with individuals whose primary qualification is not competence or ideas, but proximity to influence, hence a flow to wherever that is available. Incompetent and inexperienced actors frequently parade themselves by dropping names or flaunting endorsements from political “tin gods,” as though borrowed authority can replace personal ability.

But a fundamental question remains unanswered: if a man is helped into power, who will help him to govern?

Endorsements do not administer or fix roads. They do not represent or speak for constituencies. Yet, in systems overly driven by party machinery, endorsement sometimes becomes a substitute for evaluation. This is a dangerous distortion of democracy, where access to power is confused with capacity for governance.

This pattern has contributed significantly to the current stalemated representation in the Okigwe zone, a cycle of expectations raised but not met, of opportunities announced but not realised, of leadership that leans more on political sponsorship than on personal readiness to deliver. And unless corrected, the cycle risks repetition.

But something important is changing.

The people of Okigwe are no longer unaware spectators. They are becoming more discerning, more critical, and more determined. There is a growing conviction that says: never again will endorsement replace competence; never again will popularity substitute performance; never again will political connection be mistaken for capacity. Never again will political parties or structure befuddle the people.

This is where clarity becomes necessary for Okigwe and for serious contenders like Attorney Charles Onyirimba.

Onyirimba must understand that while big parties and endorsements may appear attractive, they are not substitutes for earned trust. His strength lies not in borrowed authority, but in personal credibility: his legal background, his analytical depth, his disciplined communication, disciplined thinking, and a growing reputation for principled engagement and his visible relatable people-oriented concerns. These are the foundations of genuine political capital, not the noise of endorsements.

This reality demands discernment. He possesses the kind of capacity that could, in a more flexible political system, stand independently. His strengths give him a foundation that is not dependent on political noise. In fact, his appeal is increasingly grounded in substance rather than structure.

He must also resist the temptation to be defined by the validation of powerful sponsors or big parties. Political history is full of individuals elevated by endorsements who later struggled under the weight of governance they were not prepared for. Power given is not the same as power possessed. And leadership that depends entirely on external validation is often fragile when real governance begins.

While the system may not yet fully support independent candidacy, he must still refuse to be swallowed by political momentum that prioritises crowd size over clarity of vision. Big parties may offer reach, but they also come with pressures that can dilute purpose. In such spaces, even strong voices risk being reshaped by the expectations of crowd pullers and internal gatekeepers.

Onyirimba must, therefore, remain anchored. His strength lies not in conformity but in conviction; not in following political waves, but in understanding the needs of the people he seeks to represent. Okigwe does not need another politician carried by structure; it needs a leader guided by clarity.

Okigwe does not need another cycle of assisted ambition. It needs prepared leadership, leaders who understand that governance is not ceremonial, but practical; not symbolic, but functional.

The people, therefore, are shifting their lens. They are no longer asking who is endorsed. They are asking who is equipped. Not who is presented, but who is prepared. Not who is sponsored, but who is capable. Not from which party, but with what capacity.

Because in the end, democracy does not answer to godfathers. It answers to citizens.

Okigwe today is no longer searching for noise. It is searching for results: roads that last, communities that are safe and secured, youths that are empowered, and leadership that listens. In that pursuit, popularity is not a substitute for competence, and structure is not a guarantee of delivery.

So, the principle remains simple but powerful: parties are tools, not masters; platforms are vehicles, not destinations. And capable men like Charles Onyirimba must guard against being absorbed into systems that reward popularity over purpose.

Because in the end, elections will not be judged by how many parties a candidate passed through, but by whether the people’s lives were improved afterward.

And Okigwe will ultimately return to one unavoidable question:
Was this leadership aligned with the people’s needs, or just another product of political movement without meaning?

Anthony Iwuoma is a seasoned columnist and political analyst.
