The atmosphere in Nigeria\u2019s political space shifted perceptibly after the Supreme Court delivered its decisive ruling, restoring the David Mark-led leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).<\/p>\n
While party loyalists celebrated and critics recalibrated, Attorney Charles Onyirimba, a frontrunner senatorial hopeful in Okigwe Zone, emerged with measured clarity rather than noise.<\/p>\n
Known for his blend of legal precision and political insight, Onyirimba did not approach the moment as a mere partisan victory. Instead, he framed it as a deeper institutional reckoning, one that transcends the fortunes of any single political actor.<\/p>\n
Speaking shortly after the judgment, Onyirimba described the ruling as \u201ca restoration of order in a space that was drifting dangerously toward arbitrariness.\u201d<\/p>\n
Unlike many who rushed to claim triumph, his reaction carried a tone of sober reflection.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat the court has done is not to hand over power,\u201d he said, \u201cbut to return it to the framework that gives it legitimacy. Without that framework, leadership becomes nothing more than a contest of survival,\u201d he said<\/p>\n
For months, the ADC had been entangled in an internal struggle that threatened to hollow out its identity. Competing claims to leadership had not only confused supporters but also raised uncomfortable questions about the party\u2019s readiness for national responsibility.<\/p>\n
Onyirimba, who has closely followed the evolution of party politics in Nigeria, saw in the crisis a familiar pattern, institutions weakened by ambition, rules bent under pressure, and legitimacy reduced to a matter of convenience.<\/p>\n
Yet, in his view, the Supreme Court\u2019s intervention has disrupted that pattern.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is a tendency in our politics to treat structure as optional and process as an inconvenience. This judgment challenges that mindset. It insists that even in politics, there are lines that must not be crossed,\u201d the legal luminary added.<\/p>\n
While acknowledging the significance of the verdict, Onyirimba was quick to caution against the excesses that often follow such judicial victories. For him, the real danger lies not in losing a case, but in mismanaging the outcome of winning one.<\/p>\n
He warned that if the ruling is weaponised to settle scores or silence dissent, the party risks undermining the very legitimacy it has just regained.<\/p>\n
According to him: \u201cEvery victory carries within it the seed of its own misuse,\u201d he noted. \u201cIf this moment becomes about exclusion rather than reconciliation, then the court would have restored order only for politics to dismantle it again.\u201d<\/p>\n
His message was clear: legitimacy must be sustained by conduct, not merely conferred by judgment.<\/p>\n
Onyirimba also turned attention to the broader implications of the ruling for public trust. In a political climate where citizens often view party structures with skepticism, he argued that moments like this offer an opportunity to rebuild confidence, if handled correctly.<\/p>\n
According to him, Nigerians are not merely watching who wins internal battles; they are watching how those victories are managed.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe electorate is no longer impressed by declarations of strength,\u201d he said. \u201cThey are looking for evidence of discipline, coherence, and the capacity to manage differences without implosion.\u201d<\/p>\n
In this sense, the ADC\u2019s next steps may prove more consequential than the judgment itself.<\/p>\n
Looking ahead, Onyirimba positioned the ruling as a potential turning point, not just for the ADC, but for opposition politics in Nigeria. With established parties grappling with internal contradictions, he suggested that a stabilised ADC could occupy a critical space in the country\u2019s democratic evolution.<\/p>\n
But he was equally clear that such an outcome is far from guaranteed.<\/p>\n
\u201cOpportunities in politics are rarely announced twice. This is one of those moments where a party either defines itself or dissolves into irrelevance,\u201d he observed.<\/p>\n
Onyirimba emphasised that unity must now be intentional and principled, not improvised for convenience.<\/p>\n
Perhaps, the most striking aspect of Onyirimba\u2019s reaction is his insistence on looking beyond the immediate drama of the ruling. For him, the judgment is not just about resolving a dispute; it is about reinforcing a standard.<\/p>\n
\u201cDemocracy is not sustained by elections alone,\u201d he noted. \u201cIt is sustained by the integrity of the processes that produce leadership. Once those processes are compromised, the system begins to decay from within.\u201d<\/p>\n
In that sense, the Supreme Court\u2019s decision, as interpreted by Onyirimba, serves as both a correction and a caution; a reminder that political legitimacy must be earned, defended, and continuously renewed.<\/p>\n
As the dust settles, the ADC stands at a crossroads, newly validated, yet newly tested. The court has spoken, but the burden of proof now shifts back to the political arena.<\/p>\n
For Charles Onyirimba, the path ahead is not ambiguous. It is a call to discipline over disorder, unity over factionalism, and principle over expediency.<\/p>\n
Whether that call will be heeded remains to be seen.
