Renewed insecurity has again gripped Zamfara State, following a deadly ambush by heavily armed bandits along the volatile Birnin Magaji\u2013Kaura Namoda corridor.<\/p>\n
The attack, which occurred on April 19 at about 1:00 p.m., targeted commuters along a stretch of road between Gidan Malam Haruna and Gidan Katare villages in Birnin Magaji Local Government Area. According to security sources cited by counter-insurgency analyst Zagazola Makama, an estimated 100 gunmen wielding AK-47 rifles barricaded the highway, bringing movement to a halt before launching a coordinated assault.<\/p>\n
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the attackers intercepted a Golf 3 vehicle transporting passengers from Nasarawa Godel market to Kaura Namoda and opened fire indiscriminately. The brutal attack left two victims dead, identified as Zaliha Usman and an unnamed infant, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the violence.<\/p>\n
In a further escalation, the bandits abducted a police inspector, Bala Abdullahi, attached to the Kaura Namoda Division, and fled the scene with his motorcycle, an incident that raises fresh concerns over the vulnerability of security personnel operating in high-risk zones.<\/p>\n
A joint response team comprising police tactical units, military personnel, community protection guards, and local hunters was swiftly deployed. However, the operatives reportedly came under heavy gunfire upon arrival, resulting in injuries to two military personnel during the exchange.<\/p>\n
The casualties were evacuated to the General Hospital in Birnin Magaji, where medical personnel confirmed the deaths of the victims while attending to the wounded. Zaliha Usman\u2019s remains have since been released to her family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.<\/p>\n
Zamfara State has remained one of Nigeria\u2019s epicentres of banditry, with criminal groups exploiting vast rural terrains and weak security coverage to carry out kidnappings, killings, and highway ambushes. The Birnin Magaji\u2013Kaura Namoda axis, in particular, has witnessed repeated attacks, making it a danger zone for travelers and security operatives alike.<\/p>\n
Despite ongoing military operations and community-based security interventions, the frequency and scale of such attacks continue to raise questions about intelligence coordination, response capacity, and long-term solutions to the region\u2019s deepening security crisis.<\/p>\n
