A tragic incident has reportedly claimed the lives of more than 150 suspected bandits in Sokoto State after a boat conveying them capsized while crossing a river in the Sabon Gida area.<\/p>\n
The development, which has stirred widespread reactions across security circles, was disclosed by Lake Chad-based counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter).<\/p>\n
According to the report, the incident occurred on Saturday evening when a wooden vessel, heavily loaded with armed men, overturned mid-transit while navigating a riverine route in the area.<\/p>\n
Makama revealed that the occupants, believed to be bandits moving in large numbers, were suddenly thrown into the water when the boat lost balance and capsized.<\/p>\n
\u201cPreliminary information suggests that many of them could not swim, leading to heavy casualties,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
Initial accounts indicate that the casualty figure may be extensive, with fears that none of those onboard survived, although official confirmation from authorities is still being awaited.<\/p>\n
The incident highlights the growing scale and mobility of armed groups operating in Nigeria\u2019s North-west, particularly in Sokoto State and neighboring regions where waterways and remote routes are increasingly being used to evade security patrols.<\/p>\n
In recent years, bandit groups have intensified their activities across the North-west and parts of the North-central, carrying out mass kidnappings, village raids, and attacks on commuters. Their operations often involve large coordinated movements, suggesting a level of organisation that continues to challenge security forces.<\/p>\n
Security experts note that such tragedy, while rare, expose both the risks within these criminal networks and the logistical methods they employ in navigating difficult terrains.<\/p>\n
Communities across Sokoto and adjoining states have endured persistent insecurity, with residents frequently caught between armed groups and security crackdowns. The use of rivers and forest corridors has made tracking these groups increasingly difficult.<\/p>\n
While this latest development may temporarily weaken one faction, analysts caution that the broader threat of banditry remains deeply entrenched, driven by factors such as poverty, weak border control, and the proliferation of arms.<\/p>\n
