A fierce overnight confrontation between Nigerian troops and insurgents in Mallam Fatori, Borno State, has left more than 80 terrorists dead, in what military authorities describe as one of the most decisive engagements in recent months.<\/p>\n
The clash, which unfolded in the early hours of Wednesday, targeted the 68 Battalion under Sector 3 of Operation HADIN KAI, the military\u2019s flagship counterinsurgency operation in Nigeria\u2019s North-East. Mallam Fatori, a border town near Niger Republic, has long been a strategic flashpoint in the battle against extremist groups due to its proximity to insurgent corridors and cross-border supply routes.<\/p>\n
According to an operational report released by the military, the attack was highly coordinated and executed from multiple directions. Insurgents reportedly advanced in large numbers on foot, supported by the use of armed drones, a growing tactic in asymmetric warfare across the region. The most intense pressure was mounted along the Bravo Company\u2019s defensive line from the Duguri axis, where the attackers attempted to force a breach.<\/p>\n
However, troops who had received prior intelligence of the impending assault were well-prepared. What followed was a swift and calculated counteroffensive, combining defensive resilience with aggressive tactical manoeuvres. Soldiers engaged the insurgents with superior firepower, successfully halting their advance and throwing their formations into disarray.<\/p>\n
As the battle intensified, air support from the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI, reinforced by allied Nigerien air assets, delivered precision strikes on retreating fighters. The coordinated bombardment inflicted further casualties, effectively dismantling the insurgents\u2019 withdrawal and compounding their losses.<\/p>\n
A subsequent sweep of the battlefield revealed the scale of the defeat. Troops recovered a significant cache of weapons and equipment, including dozens of AK-47 rifles, machine guns, rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) launchers, improvised explosive devices, and components of armed drones, an indication of both the sophistication and intent of the attackers.<\/p>\n
Among those killed were three high-ranking insurgent commanders identified as Malam Abdulrahman Gobara, Malam Ba Yuram, and Abou Ayyuba. Their deaths are expected to deal a significant blow to the operational coordination and leadership structure of insurgent groups active in the axis.<\/p>\n
Despite the intensity of the encounter, military sources confirmed that only four soldiers were wounded in action. They have since been stabilised, while a comprehensive battle damage assessment remains ongoing.<\/p>\n
The military described the outcome as a major operational success, reaffirming that troops remain firmly in control of Mallam Fatori and its surrounding areas. It also dismissed circulating reports suggesting setbacks as misinformation aimed at undermining public confidence.<\/p>\n
Operation HADIN KAI has, in recent years, intensified efforts to dismantle insurgent networks across Borno and the wider North-East, combining ground offensives with air superiority and regional collaboration. While sporadic attacks persist, encounters such as the Mallam Fatori battle highlight both the evolving tactics of insurgents and the military\u2019s adaptive response.<\/p>\n
