Panic rippled through one of Nigeria\u2019s foremost agricultural institutions on Wednesday as armed men abducted four cocoa farmers at the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria in the Idi-Ayunre area of Ibadan.<\/p>\n
According to reports, the assailants, said to be about six in number, emerged from surrounding bush paths and intercepted a vehicle conveying the farmers within the institute\u2019s premises. The victims were reportedly visiting the facility for a familiarisation exercise when the attack occurred.<\/p>\n
A survivor who managed to escape described a sudden and coordinated ambush. The group, he said, was en route to the institute\u2019s Nursing Section when the gunmen struck, overpowering them and whisking away four individuals into the forest.<\/p>\n
The incident highlights growing concerns over insecurity creeping into spaces once considered relatively safe, including research institutions and agricultural hubs. The Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria, a critical centre for cocoa development and innovation, has long served farmers, researchers, and stakeholders across the country.<\/p>\n
However, the broader security climate in Nigeria, marked by kidnappings, rural banditry, and highway ambushes, has increasingly blurred the lines between conflict zones and civilian spaces. Farmers, in particular, have become vulnerable targets, often attacked in remote or semi-isolated locations where security presence is thin.<\/p>\n
The spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, confirmed the incident in a message to journalists, noting that authorities are aware and presumably taking steps to address the situation.<\/p>\n
This latest abduction adds to a troubling pattern of attacks on agricultural workers and rural communities across Nigeria. Analysts warn that beyond the immediate human cost, such incidents threaten food security, disrupt livelihoods, and undermine investor confidence in the agricultural sector.<\/p>\n
