Nigeria\u2019s Senate witnessed a dramatic political realignment on Thursday, March 12, 2026, as nine lawmakers abandoned their respective parties to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), instantly elevating the party to the dominant force within the chamber\u2019s minority bloc.<\/p>\n
The wave of defections, formally announced during plenary by Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, signals a deepening volatility in Nigeria\u2019s party system and hints at fresh maneuvering ahead of future political contests.<\/p>\n
At the forefront of the political migration was Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, senator representing Sokoto South, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ADC. Tambuwal\u2019s departure from the PDP is widely viewed as one of the most consequential moves of the day, given his long-standing influence in national politics.<\/p>\n
He was joined by Enyinnaya Abaribe, the senator representing Abia South, who exited the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and Victor Umeh, the Anambra Central lawmaker, who cited internal turmoil within the Labour Party (LP) as the reason for his decision to abandon the party.<\/p>\n
In his defection letter read on the Senate floor, Umeh pointed to the persistent leadership disputes and legal battles rocking the Labour Party.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have taken this decision after wide consultations with my family, constituents and supporters in view of the lingering divisions in the leadership and unending litigations pervading the entirety of the Labour Party in Nigeria,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
He added that his political move would not diminish his commitment to national development.<\/p>\n
The exodus did not stop there. Several other senators followed the same path, swelling the ranks of the ADC.<\/p>\n
Among them were Ogoshi Onawo of Nasarawa South, who left the PDP, and Ireti Kingibe, the senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, who also departed the Labour Party.<\/p>\n

Austin Akobundu (Abia Central) \u2013 formerly PDP<\/p>\n
Tony Nwoye (Anambra North) \u2013 formerly Labour Party<\/p>\n
Binos Yaroe (Adamawa South) \u2013 formerly PDP<\/p>\n
Lawal Adamu Usman (Kaduna Central) \u2013 formerly PDP<\/p>\n
In his own explanation, Usman said the move was aimed at strengthening democratic participation and delivering better representation for his constituents.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have resolved to align with the African Democratic Congress in order to continue to effectively pursue the democratic aspirations and developmental interests of the people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Similarly, Onawo described his defection as a principled choice driven by the desire to deepen democratic ideals and support national development.<\/p>\n
The latest defections have altered the party composition within the Senate, even though the All Progressives Congress (APC) still retains overwhelming control of the chamber.<\/p>\n

APC \u2014 85 senators<\/p>\n
ADC \u2014 9 senators<\/p>\n
PDP \u2014 8 senators<\/p>\n
New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) \u2014 1 senator<\/p>\n
National Democratic Coalition (NDC) \u2014 1 senator<\/p>\n
APGA \u2014 1 senator<\/p>\n
Social Democratic Party (SDP) \u2014 1 senator<\/p>\n
With nine senators, the ADC has now become the largest opposition party in the Senate, displacing the PDP from its traditional position as the main minority voice.<\/p>\n
The Senate currently operates with three vacant seats, following the deaths of Barinada Mpigi, Godiya Akwashiki, and Okey Ezea, who previously represented Rivers South-East, Nasarawa North, and Enugu North respectively.<\/p>\n
Their passing has reduced the chamber\u2019s active membership while preparations for by-elections continue.<\/p>\n
Beyond the numbers, the defections highlight a broader pattern in Nigerian politics: the fluidity of party loyalty. Political actors frequently change platforms, often citing ideological alignment, internal party crises, or the pursuit of better political opportunities.<\/p>\n
For the ADC, the sudden influx of senators represents its most significant institutional breakthrough since its formation, offering the party a stronger legislative voice and a platform to position itself as a credible alternative in the nation\u2019s increasingly fragmented political arena.<\/p>\n
Whether this new alignment will endure or simply mark another episode in Nigeria\u2019s tradition of shifting political alliances remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: the Senate\u2019s minority bloc has been dramatically reshaped, and the ripple effects may extend well beyond the red chamber.<\/p>\n
