Nigeria\u2019s march toward the 2027 general elections has taken a decisive turn, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) unveiling a sweeping revision of the electoral timetable that shifts the presidential contest to January 16, 2027<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The announcement, made Thursday night in Abuja, follows the repeal of the Electoral Act 2022 and the enactment of the\u00a0Electoral Act 2026<\/strong>, a legislative overhaul that has recalibrated statutory timelines governing party primaries, campaigns, and election administration.<\/p>\n INEC said the changes were necessitated by the new legal framework, which compelled the Commission to realign previously announced dates.<\/p>\n National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Malam Mohammed Kudu Haruna, explained that the revised schedule ensures full compliance with the 2026 Act and the 1999 Constitution (as amended).<\/p>\n Under the new arrangement:<\/p>\n The dates mark a notable departure from Nigeria\u2019s recent electoral tradition, where presidential elections typically take place in late February, followed by state-level polls in March.<\/p>\n The recalibration has also affected off-cycle elections.
