Dr. SKC Ogbonnia, s former presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, APC, from Enugu State, has resigned his membership of the ruling party.<\/p>\n
Ogbonnia announced his decision in a resignation letter dated Tuesday and addressed to the APC chairman of his ward\u2014Owelli\/Amoli\/Ugbo\/Ogugu Ward\u2014in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State. Copies of the letter were sent to all levels of the party structure, from the ward to the national leadership, and were accompanied by the return of his APC membership card.<\/p>\n
In the letter, Ogbonnia accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of presiding over what he described as a failed government, alleging that poor leadership had weakened Nigeria\u2019s sovereignty and exposed the country to foreign military intervention.<\/p>\n
He said his decision followed extensive consultations with his family and political associates, as well as deep reflection on Nigeria\u2019s political realities and the current direction of the APC.<\/p>\n
Ogbonnia recalled that he was a founding member of the party, driven by high expectations of positive change, national progress, and inclusive development. However, he said recent developments had made continued membership \u201cuntenable and unbearable.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSpecifically, the leadership of the party under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has failed to address critical issues such as insecurity, poverty, and unemployment, which directly affect the future of our people and the teeming youth population,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n
He also faulted what he described as the absence of internal democracy within the APC, citing imposition of leaders, marginalization of loyal members, vendetta politics, and entrenched nepotism, which he said had undermined electoral rights and stifled participation within the party.<\/p>\n
According to him, the party has also pursued a one-party state agenda through \u201cunderhand practices\u201d aimed at weakening opposition parties.<\/p>\n
Ogbonnia further lamented what he called the exclusion of young people from key federal appointments, describing it as a clear signal of disregard for future generations.<\/p>\n
On national security, he accused President Tinubu of indifference to worsening insecurity across the country, arguing that such nonchalance had compromised Nigeria\u2019s sovereignty and made it vulnerable to neocolonial foreign military interventions.<\/p>\n
He also condemned alleged moves within the APC to endorse President Tinubu for a second term ahead of the 2027 elections, describing the plan as \u201ca gross insult to the sensibilities of Nigerians.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a president who has failed in most critical areas of national development and is, in my view, irredeemable,\u201d Ogbonnia stated.<\/p>\n
He further alleged that President Tinubu had lost public confidence at home and credibility abroad, claiming that Nigeria\u2019s leader was increasingly isolated among key international allies, particularly the United States.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese issues, among many others, have convinced me that the APC, in its current state, does not serve the best interests of my community or Nigeria as a whole,\u201d he said. \u201cI can no longer align myself with a political path that undermines the principles of true democracy and good governance that Nigerians deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ogbonnia, however, expressed appreciation to the party leadership at all levels for the opportunity and support he received when he sought the presidency on the APC platform during the 2019 electoral cycle, wishing the party well in its future endeavours.<\/p>\n
The resignation of the former presidential aspirant, some analysts say, may have set off anticipated plans by many others to quit the ruling party.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
