The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has contended that borrowing under the administration of President Bola Tinubu is to fund development through building of critical infrastructure.
\nThe APC spokesman, Mr Seye Oladejo, in a statement entitled \u201cPeter Obi\u2019s Borrowing Hypocrisy: Physician, Heal Thyself\u201d on Thursday berated the 2023 Labour Party\u2019s (LP) Presidential Candidate\u2019s criticism of\u00a0Tinubu\u2019s borrowings.
\nThe former Anambra governor had called on accountants to confront Tinubu-Federal Government over\u00a0what he called \u201creckless borrowings\u201d.
\nOladejo advised Obi to play to his strengths in politics, \u201cas topics bordering on finance, economy, development, and social policy remain his enduring handicap.\u201d
\nAccording to him, borrowing under the present administration is strategic, tied to projects and funding of productive sectors.
\n\u201cFirst, borrowing is not inherently reckless. What matters is purpose and prudence.
\n\u201cUnder President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, borrowing is strategic, tied to critical infrastructure, energy, transportation, and productive sectors.\u00a0
\n\u201cThis is the globally accepted practice-even the most advanced economies borrow to fund growth.
\n\u201cSecond, Peter Obi has no moral authority to lecture anyone about prudence.
\n\u201cNigerians remember that as governor, he left behind unpaid pensions, collapsing infrastructure, and poor human capital indices,\u201d Oladejo said.\u00a0
\nHe said that Obi had consistently displayed extravagant tendencies, adding\u00a0that it was a contradiction that he was going about\u00a0giving sermons on prudent management of resources.\u00a0
\n\u201cFor someone who flew around the world in private jets during his campaign while sermonising about cutting costs, the contradictions are glaring,\u201d he said.
\nAccording to him, unlike Obi\u2019s motivational-speech politics, Tinubu is taking bold, necessary steps to reset the economy.
\n\u201cSubsidy removal, currency reforms, and targeted borrowing are difficult but inevitable measures to secure Nigeria\u2019s future. This is leadership in action \u2013 not empty moralising,\u201d he added
\nHe urged Obi to refrain from commenting on serious matters of finance and governance, \u201dhe is out of depth and out of place\u201d.
\nOladejo said that Tinubu was building Nigeria\u2019s future, while Obi was busy building sound bites.
