\nPeter Obi, the Labour Party\u00a0presidential candidate of\u00a0 in the 2023 general elections, has thrown light on his past engagement with former military Head of State, General Sani Abacha.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He described it as solely economic engagement and had no political leaning whatsoever.<\/div>\n
\nIn a statement titled \u201cOur Engagement with General Abacha: Setting the Record Straight\u201d, Obi said his involvement with Abacha was civic intervention due to\u00a0concerns expressed by Nigerian importers and traders over prolonged delays in clearing goods at the nation\u2019s ports, adding that it a collective effort by the business community to restore efficiency in port operations.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur intention was clear: to advocate for efficiency, and to propose practical steps towards restoring normalcy in port operations for the benefit of the wider business community and, ultimately, the Nigerian economy,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n

He insisted that the move was made in good faith without any political ambitions and also attached a letter as evidence of his co-option into a Taskforce on port decongestion.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n\u201cI don\u2019t expect this copious evidence to bury this Abacha case because the mischief makers have ulterior motives,\u201d he said. \u201cBut it\u2019s being placed in the public space for posterity and in line with my transparency pledge to Nigerians on any issue I am involved in,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
