{"id":6312,"date":"2025-05-30T06:42:23","date_gmt":"2025-05-30T06:42:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/?p=6312"},"modified":"2025-05-30T06:42:23","modified_gmt":"2025-05-30T06:42:23","slug":"kanu-wins-as-court-rejects-confessional-statement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/index.php\/2025\/05\/30\/kanu-wins-as-court-rejects-confessional-statement\/","title":{"rendered":"Kanu wins as court rejects confessional statement\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6315\" src=\"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/images1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/images1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/images1.jpg 678w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Kanu<\/p>\n<p>By Amah<\/p>\n<p>Kindly share:<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The Federal High Court Judge in Abuja on Thursday delivered a landmark judgement rejecting the confessional statement made by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Kanu has been facing trial over alleged treason and been in detention for several years.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Efforts by the Federal Government to tender video and documentary evidence of the alleged confessional statements made by the defendant to the Department of State Services, DSS, hit the rocks, following objection by Kanu&#8217;s counsel, Paul Erokoro.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The defence counsel had objected to the admissibility of the evidence on the grounds that the statements were made under duress, resulting in the judge, Justice James Omotosho, to order a trial-within-trial to ascertain the voluntariness of statements attributed to the defendant.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nRuling after the trial-within-a-trial, the court rejected video recordings and documented confessions presented by the prosecution, ruling that they were obtained in violation of the defendant\u2019s constitutional rights.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Omotosho held that even though the video evidence did not show that Kanu was coerced to make the statement, it fell short of legal expectations, as it was made without legal representation, which is mandatory under the circumstances.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n\u201cThe statements are inadmissible in light of this omission by the prosecution,\u201d the judge ruled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe objection of the defendant\u2019s counsel is upheld.
