Borno state Governor Babagana Zulum, Wednesday, claimed some politicians and members of the Nigeria\u2019s armed forces are playing the role of informants and collaborators for Boko Haram insurgents.<\/p>\n
He said the state would strengthen its intelligence network and \u201cruthlessly\u201d deal with the saboteurs where found.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have informants and collaborators within the Nigerian armed forces, within the politicians, and within the communities. What we shall do is to strengthen our intelligence and to deal with them ruthlessly.<\/p>\n
\u201cLet\u2019s remove contractocracy. In six months, we can put an end to this madness. We need not politicise insecurity,\u201d the \u00a0governor said while featuring on the interview segments of News Central.<\/p>\n
On the issue of the repentant insurgents, Zulum \u00a0said: \u201cI cannot completely say that 100% of those people who have surrendered are doing the right thing, but I want to assure you that over 99% are doing well and are not participating in the ongoing terrorism.\u201d<\/p>\n
He reiterated the need for \u00a0both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies in tackling insurgency, noting \u00a0that military approach alone won\u2019t \u00a0bring about a total end to insurgency.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cInsurgency will never be ended by kinetic measures alone. We must ensure that the non-kinetic measures are also properly put in place.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat I mean by non-kinetic measures is social, political, and economic dimensions of the crisis. Our ongoing non-kinetic measures have yielded positive results with the support of the Nigerian military,\u201d\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n
Speaking further on the repentant fighters whose figure he put at over 500,000, the governor said: \u201cYes, I believe among the 500,000 or more that have repented, I cannot rule out the possibility of fewer of them going back to the bush.\u201d<\/p>\n
Zulum who said \u201cthe army doesn\u2019t have the necessary equipment on ground to fight the insurgency\u201d\u00a0headlong, \u00a0\u00a0however, lauded \u201cthe \u00a0Nigerian armed forces for the support that they have been rendering to our non-kinetic measures.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2026Plea to Tinubu<\/p>\n
While pleading with President \u00a0Bola Ahmed \u00a0Tinubu \u00a0for further support, he said: \u201cThe forest guard shall be provided immediately. The President of Nigeria needs to listen to those who can differentiate their left from their right.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe should not politicise insecurity. The President needs to listen to the people who can tell him the right thing. The President should listen to the army.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2026Senate urges intensified military action<\/p>\n
In a related development, the\u00a0Senate Wednesday urgently called\u00a0 for intensified military action against the fresh wave of\u00a0 Boko Haram insurgency in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states,\u00a0 which according to it, has left\u00a0 dozens dead, entire communities destroyed, and thousands displaced across the affected states.<\/p>\n
The call followed a motion sponsored by Senator\u00a0Aminu Iya Abbas (PDP Adamawa Central) and supported by 17 other senators from the North East.<\/p>\n
Senator Abbas, in his lead debate on the motion,\u00a0recounted recent attacks that devastated his constituency.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn Kwampre and Zar, homes were burned and schools destroyed on February 25 , 2025.\u00a0In Banga and Lar, five people were killed on April 15, and churches and homes were set ablaze. Then on April 26, eleven volunteer vigilantes from a neighboring local government were murdered while defending a corporate community.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust last week, the attack on Kulda community in Hong LGA on May 16 was particularly devastating. Sixteen people were killed, and 90 percent of homes and places of worship were reduced to ashes. These people now live as refugees in their own land,\u201d the lawmaker lamented.<\/p>\n
Contributing to the motion, Senate Whip Mohammed Tahir Monguno (Borno North), said: \u201cBoko Haram is back. Just last week, five soldiers were killed in Marte LGA. Government lodges and police stations were destroyed. In Kukawa, 23 people were massacred in one community, and 40 in another\u2014simply for allegedly pledging allegiance to a different faction of Boko Haram.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Senate also raised concerns over the redeployment of military resources from the Northeast to the Northwest, where operations against banditry had taken priority.<\/p>\n
The lawmakers warned that the resulting security vacuum was enabling insurgents to regroup and launch deadly attacks.<\/p>\n
In its resolutions, the Senate asked the government to urgently strengthen military presence in the most affected areas\u2014particularly in Hong LGA of Adamawa\u2014and urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide immediate humanitarian relief to displaced residents.<\/p>\n
A one-minute silence was observed in honour of the victims.<\/p>\n
However, Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa West) cautioned that the Senate must remain within constitutional limits.<\/p>\n
\u201cDirecting the establishment of military bases is outside our mandate,\u201d Dickson said, \u201cOnly the President, as Commander-in-Chief, can make that call.\u00a0We can recommend, but not command.\u201d<\/p>\n
