{"id":5568,"date":"2025-04-11T06:11:50","date_gmt":"2025-04-11T06:11:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/?p=5568"},"modified":"2025-04-11T06:11:50","modified_gmt":"2025-04-11T06:11:50","slug":"crazy-billing-nerc-imposes-n628m-fine-on-discos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/index.php\/2025\/04\/11\/crazy-billing-nerc-imposes-n628m-fine-on-discos\/","title":{"rendered":"Crazy billing: NERC imposes N628m fine on DisCos\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5569\" src=\"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/download-2-300x179.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/download-2-300x179.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/download-2.jpeg 332w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By Publisher<\/p>\n<p>Kindly share:<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has slammed a hefty fine on some Electricity Distribution Companies for non-compliance with the capping of estimated billing for unmetered customers.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The affected DisCos, including Abuja, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola, are you cough out a whopping<br \/>\nthe sum of N628.03 million in fines for the breach.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nThe commission in a release yesterday,<br \/>\nexplained that the action follows a review of billing practices between July and September 2024, which revealed that the affected DisCos flouted the monthly energy caps issued by NERC.<\/p>\n<p>The fines represent five per cent of the gross overbilling during the period under review, it said.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, NERC also mandated the affected DisCos to provide credit adjustments to all overbilled customers by May 15, 2025, which coincides with the end of the April billing cycle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe public may recall that in 2020, the commission issued the Order on Capping of Estimated Bills (Order No: NERC\/197\/2020) and subsequently issued monthly energy caps which aimed to align the estimated bills for unmetered customers with the measured consumption of metered customers on the same supply feeder.<br \/>\nRead Also: NNPCL: Time for a new direction,&#8221; the statement read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA review of DisCos\u2019 billing of unmetered customers for July \u2013 September 2024 (2024\/Q3) revealed non-compliance with the monthly energy caps issued by the commission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe non-compliant DisCos have been sanctioned to pay fines amounting to six hundred and twenty-eight million, thirty-one thousand, five hundred and eighty-three naira and ninety-four kobo (N628,031,583.94), which is equivalent to 5% of the naira value of the gross overbilling for the period under review.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe commission has also mandated the DisCos to issue commensurate credit adjustments to all customers affected by the overbilling by 15th May 2025 \u2013 the end of the April 2025 billing cycle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe commission reaffirms its commitment to regulatory compliance and consumer protection within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">NERC also reiterated its commitment to consumer protection and regulatory compliance within Nigeria\u2019s electricity industry, as well as its position on arbitrary billing practices.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Publisher Kindly share: The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has slammed a hefty fine on some Electricity Distribution Companies&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":5569,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[1303],"class_list":["post-5568","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business-economy","tag-nigerian-electricity-regulatory-commission"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.8 -
