{"id":5462,"date":"2025-04-02T19:35:04","date_gmt":"2025-04-02T19:35:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/?p=5462"},"modified":"2025-04-02T19:35:04","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T19:35:04","slug":"tribunal-affirms-okpebholo-election-as-edo-governor-dismisses-ighodalos-petition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/index.php\/2025\/04\/02\/tribunal-affirms-okpebholo-election-as-edo-governor-dismisses-ighodalos-petition\/","title":{"rendered":"Tribunal affirms Okpebholo election as Edo Governor, dismisses Ighodalo&#8217;s petition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5463\" src=\"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/OIP-1-4-300x161.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/OIP-1-4-300x161.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/OIP-1-4.jpeg 474w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Okpebholo<\/p>\n<p>By Publisher<\/p>\n<p>Kindly share:<\/p>\n<p>The election of Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State was in Wednesday evening ratified by the<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">state&#8217;s Election Petition Tribunal.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Okpebholo, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the September 21, 2024 governorship poll in Edo State, was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, having polled 291, 667 to defeat his closet rival, Ighodalo of PDP, who garnered 247, 655 votes.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The Peoples Democratic Party,\u00a0 PDP, and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, disputed the victory and went to the Edo State Governorship Election Tribunal, seeking to nullify the results.<\/p>\n<p>However, the three-man panel of the tribunal sitting in Abuja, in a landmark judgement delivered by its chairman, Justice Wilfred Kpochi, ruled otherwise, saying Okpebholo was validly elected.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nThe tribunal held that Ighodalo and his party failed to prove over-voting and did not call relevant witnesses.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the panel noted that the petitioners did not address the documents they tendered, but instead\u00a0 dumped them on the tribunal.<\/p>\n<p>The tribunal added that the petitioners failed to properly tender the voter\u2019s register, BVAS and EC8A in accordance with\u00a0the requirements of the law to<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">prove over-voting.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Kpochi also held that the petitioners also failed to call eye witnesses to testify on alleged over-voting, which made the allegations unbelievable.<\/p>\n<p>Ighodalo and the PDP had,\u00a0 through through their lawyer Mr. Ken Mozia, SAN, petitioned the Tribunal seeking to upturn Okpebholo\u2019s victory on the grounds of alleged over-voting, wrong computation of results during collation of results\u00a0and non-compliance with the electoral laws.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Okpebholo By Publisher Kindly share: The election of Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State was in Wednesday evening ratified by&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":5463,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[1282,1281],"class_list":["post-5462","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-asue-ighodalo","tag-governor-monday-okpebholo"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.8 -
